3. ‘Organisational Story’ –  exploring visions and values

What is it?
Used to engage staff within the organisation, these workshops use vivid metaphors and images to identify and bring values to life and support positive and permanent change.

Who’s it for?
Organisations going through re-structuring, re-branding or re-aligning of values, or those who want a clearer vision of their future direction.

Workshops include activities such as:

Journey metaphors – describing the future of the organisation using creative, right brain methodology

Sharing success stories around the current and espoused values – using a story template to describe the event and to pull out the positive learning

Creating ‘rich pictures’ to bring the values to life and to engender enthusiasm and energy – to be used in internal and external marketing

Learning histories – insightful transcripts that help to share problems and generate innovative solutions

ORIGINAL BRIEF: “We want something to bring the values to life – we don’t just want a flat list on the wall”

This was the ‘brief briefing’ we received from the HR Director of an organisation within the pensions industry. We designed and ran a number of workshops for mixed groups of participants, from senior manager to pensions administrator. Together they identified a shortlist of values they thought best described their organisation, both now and in the future – integrity, customer focused, professional – they created ‘rich pictures’ of each value and ‘sold’ the value to their colleagues.

For the next 4 weeks, working in conjunction with their IT department, we set up an on-line voting system so that all 150 employees throughout the organisation could vote for the value/s they thought were the most important. The Chief Executive announced the winners, and all Board members agreed to abide by and endorse the outcome. Since then, the values have become an essential part of their recruitment, training, appraisal and marketing strategies.

“…No-one can say they don’t know what our values are or what they mean!”
